The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
