Much like bad weather swept through the northern region the night before, City swept United aside at the Etihad. It was a emphatic three goal win for their manager's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they consolidated their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Defeats for Manchester United

This outcome represented back-to-back league defeats for Skinner's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, placing them a sizable gap off the top team with their title hopes in serious doubt.

United’s ability to manage league and European football with a small squad has been a frequently analyzed issue since they earned a place in the Champions League. The hosts, on the other hand, could have extended their lead when a superb Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Having failed to overcome any team who finished above them last season, City's side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a commanding position after the opening fixtures.
